Monday Motivation with Jeff Bravin

#LetsFaceIt

Welcome back to our Monday Motivation series, where we’re dedicated to infusing your week with inspiration and positivity. As we enter the third Monday in May, let’s embrace the opportunity to set the tone for a fulfilling and successful week ahead.

Amidst our exploration of motivation, let’s take a moment to reflect on the transformative impact of institutions like the American School for the Deaf. Established as the first permanent school for the deaf in the United States and the proud birthplace of American Sign Language, it symbolizes resilience and progress. In 1982, it opened its PACES Residential Treatment Center, which was a first of its kind program for deaf and hard of hearing students with significant behavioral and emotional challenges.

For over 40 years, PACES has served as a critical lifeline for students, who often do not have many other options for help. The experience of trauma in PACES is universal. The students enrolled in this program have diverse home lives – some are in the foster care system while others have parents whose rights were terminated.

For many, the experience of home is one of deep isolation due to communication barriers. The critical clinical supports and language access found at ASD in PACES are a welcome relief that lead to life-changing outcomes. Consider one student’s journey: she endured domestic violence and was exposed to substance abuse from a tender age, with a father incarcerated and a mother battling addiction. At 11, she arrived at ASD, grappling with aggression and emotional shutdown.

Now, at 16, she expresses her emotions freely and feels secure in her environment. Her trajectory towards a brighter future is fueled by the specialized therapeutic support available at PACES. ASD proudly stands with Mental Health Awareness Month, advocating for comprehensive support systems to enable children and adults worldwide to thrive.

As we embrace the beginning of this new week in May, let’s remember that each day presents us with unique opportunities for growth and progress. By harnessing the power of intention-setting, fostering a positive outlook, and prioritizing self-care, we can transform Mondays into a launchpad for our aspirations and dreams. Stay tuned for more Monday Motivation posts as we continue to empower and uplift you through stories, tips, and practices from experts.

Time is running out to support our Winter Wellness Campaign! Your donation helps us provide essential mental health resources and expand access to care for individuals in need. Let’s come together to ensure no one has to face winter’s challenges alone.

While our Winter Wellness Campaign is coming to a close, our toolkit will be available on our website all winter long as we continue to embrace warmth, connection, and wellness.

This year’s Winter Wellness with MHC campaign is focused on giving mental health resources and support to communities throughout Connecticut.

Your donation will support the Mental Health Concierge sliding scale, enabling us to provide flexible mental health services to individuals in need throughout the state.

Your donation will enable us to provide mental health services, including therapy, in-home support, and case management, to low-income individuals and individuals experiencing homelessness.
