Many people today find that they need some help in dealing with mental health issues, but unfortunately, there still tends to be a stigma surrounding the topic that holds many people back from getting the care they need. Those who are struggling may need assistance in coping with their mental health challenges, but they may also need to ensure that they are addressing the needs of both their mind and their body. It is not always easy to eliminate stress and embrace a healthier life, but experts do share some strategies that can help.

The stigma surrounding mental health care holds some back from getting help

Most people can agree that it is not always as easy as it should be to get adequate mental health help, and the stigma that is often connected to the topic of mental health care does not help. Science News notes that the stigma regarding mental health and mental illness is quite widespread and this issue can lead to many people feeling shame over their issues. As a result, they may hesitate to reach out for help.

Breaking this stigma is no easy task, but progress can be made when professionals find ways to set the stage locally and ensure that those in a position to connect with troubled individuals are properly trained and ready to provide assistance. Those who need mental health care may not always feel comfortable initiating the process of acquiring help, and they may feel isolated and frustrated over their situation. Equipping people like pastors and educators, for example, can make access easier for those who need it and may hesitate to take the first step.

Taking care of both one’s mind and body is critical for healthy living

Self-care can be a difficult process when one is struggling, but taking care of both your body and your mind is critical to your well-being, especially if you are dealing with some mental health challenges. The University of Michigan Health Service emphasizes eating properly, exercising, and getting enough sleep as important strategies to implement for taking care of yourself.

Of course, there is more to self-care than just the physical components. Nourishing your mind is critical as well, and this can be accomplished in part by avoiding self-criticism, embracing hobbies, volunteering, and building a solid support system. Stress management is important and activities like writing in a journal, embracing humor, and playing with a pet can significantly reduce one’s stress levels.

Make changes at home to create a stress-free environment

Reducing stress in your life may well start at home, and Redfin shares some suggestions of how to create a stress-free living situation. Clear out the clutter, as this can be distracting and stressful to be around, and consider adding items like plants or aromatherapy diffusers to your living space to lighten the atmosphere and reduce your stress.

Modifying the lighting and temperature of your home can have an impact in reducing stress as well, and Whole Living suggests creating at least one spot in your home that is designed specifically to create joy and peace for you. Additional ways to optimize your home for stress-free living include embracing natural light throughout your living space and setting up one spot where items like keys, mail, glasses, and wallets or purses go so you don’t have to scramble trying to find those items.

Of course, creating a stress-free living environment is no substitute for quality mental health care. However, combining a relaxing home setting with mind and body self-care as well as help as it is needed from professionals can all work together to help you feel stronger and better able to tackle life’s everyday challenges.
